- The total wattage for each type of bulb (CFL, fluorescent, halogen or incandescent) you wish to replace with LEDs
- An estimate of how long the bulb(s) being replaced are used for per day in hours
- The cost of your electricity in pence per kWh, which can be found on your latest energy bill

How Do You Calculate Energy Savings for LED Lights?
To calculate energy and financial savings for LED lights, you need to consider three key factors: bulb wattage, hours of use, and electricity cost.
- First, compare the wattage of your existing bulb(s) to that of the replacement LED light(s). The difference is the amount of watts you’ll save.
- Next, calculate the number of hours the lights will be used per day. An estimate or average is fine.
- Multiply the wattage saved by the number of hours, then divide by 1000 to get the total kilowatt-hours saved per day.
- Finally, multiply the total kilowatt-hours saved by the electricity cost per kilowatt-hour to work out how much money you’ll save daily.
Here’s a quick example:
- To replace a single 50w halogen bulb with a 5w LED gives a saving of 45 watts.
- The light is used for one hour per day.
- 45 watts x 1 hour divided by 1000 = 0.045 kWh saved per day
- 0.045 kWh x an electric unit rate of £0.30 per kWh = £0.0135 saved per day or £4.73 per year (minus 2 weeks for holidays)
Remember, this example is for just one bulb. If you have ten halogen spotlights in your kitchen or bathroom, the savings jump to £47.30 every year.
